A man who contacted Miami Context has shared his account of a family and legal dispute that he says resulted in him being separated from his four-month-old daughter in Broward County more than a decade ago.

According to his account, his daughter was born in Coral Springs and the family was living in South Florida in 2013. He says that at the time he was working regularly, supporting his household and attempting to build a life with his young family despite not having legal immigration status.

The man claims that problems within the relationship eventually led to police and court involvement. He says the Broward Sheriff’s Office became involved and that he was ultimately separated from his daughter when she was approximately four months old.

He maintains that he was innocent of the allegations made against him and says he later spent approximately two years in prison. He also alleges that some of the accusations made during the dispute were false and were used to prevent him from maintaining contact with his daughter.

The father further made allegations regarding immigration-related conduct by members of his former partner’s family. Miami Context has not independently verified those claims and is not identifying the people accused.

More than a decade later, he says he continues to believe authorities did not have the full picture when decisions involving his daughter were made.

At the same time, he said he understands that law enforcement and other authorities may have believed they were acting to protect the child.

“I can forgive that,” he wrote in his message, while continuing to maintain that his version of events was not properly heard.

Despite his experience, the man said he does not hold resentment toward the United States, describing the country as the place where his first child was born.

Miami Context has not independently reviewed court records, police reports, immigration documents or other records connected to the allegations described in this account. The story above reflects the claims and perspective submitted by the individual.
