Researchers at Florida International University are set to enhance their severe weather studies following a financial boost of $15 million. The contribution is earmarked for the development of an advanced iteration of the testing apparatus, designated as WOW 2.0.

Jack Puleo, who serves as the dean of the institution's College of Engineering and Computing, noted that the facility aids in comprehending infrastructure vulnerabilities against severe atmospheric conditions, ultimately driving societal benefits through innovation.

Conditions and local impact

Currently, the university houses the sole academic installation in the country capable of replicating the conditions of a Category 5 storm while evaluating full-scale structures. With the new funding, the upgraded system will maintain its capacity to subject building elements to gales reaching 200 miles per hour.
