MIAMI: Resident Pleads Guilty to Ringleading $245 Million Crypto Scheme

A 22-year-old man living in Miami pleaded guilty to charges connected to stealing nearly a quarter-billion dollars in bitcoin from a resident in Washington, D.C. The defendant admitted to organizing a network of young men who executed a series of cryptocurrency scams using social engineering techniques.

Authorities stated that the group duped a victim out of 4,100 bitcoin in August 2024 after imposters posed as representatives of Google and the Gemini crypto exchange. The scheme gave the conspirators access to the victim's digital accounts to siphon off the funds.

Key details in the case

The defendant utilized the laundered proceeds to finance a lavish lifestyle that included renting mansions in Miami, purchasing over 30 exotic cars, and acquiring expensive watches. FBI agents ultimately arrested the ringleader at his Miami rental home following a month-long spending spree.

Federal prosecutors confirmed the conviction marks a significant milestone in the ongoing investigation into the international cybercrime ring. The defendant now faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, with a status hearing scheduled before the district judge in December.
